10 YEARS OF IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE

We study how
family engagement
actually works.

Family Engagement Lab builds the research and partnerships that help education systems make families true instructional partners in student learning.

OUR MISSION

Family Engagement Lab's mission is to help schools ignite the potential of millions of families to support their child's learning.

WHO WE SERVE

TEACHERS & GRADE-LEVEL TEAMS

Family Engagement Lab's FASTalk program offers teachers a clear starting point for connecting classroom learning to what families can do at home — curriculum-aligned resources and a structured routine built into how you already teach, not added on top of it. You don't have to invent what to say or build this from scratch. Families get a concrete, learning-focused way in.
PRACTITIONERS & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT STAFF
Family Engagement Lab helps family engagement staff connect their existing work with families directly to classroom learning — through curriculum-aligned resources, structured routines, and implementation support grounded in what actually works in real school conditions. The goal is to make every family touchpoint learning-focused, not just communicative.
SCHOOL & DISTRICT LEADERS
Family Engagement Lab works with district and school leaders to build the conditions that make curriculum-aligned family engagement work in practice — not just at the start, but over time. We bring implementation learning from across diverse school contexts to help districts understand what's required, what predicts success, and how to build a practice that lasts.
RESEARCHERS & COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Family Engagement Lab works with researchers and community organizations to bring research-backed instructional family engagement to the communities they serve. We contribute the approach, the evidence, and the implementation learning — partners bring the relationships and context that make it meaningful for more families and schools.
THE PROBLEM

The gap isn't access.
It's alignment.

A teacher knows what students are learning. Families may be eager to help. Schools invest heavily in communication. But today they lack connection.

Teachers are asked to "engage families" without enough time or guidance, families are unclear on what meaningful support looks like, and most school and district family engagement communication operates separately from what is happening in the classroom.

<40%

of families receive regular, actionable information about what their child is learning — despite widespread adoption of communication platforms and family outreach programs.

Billions invested. Messages sent. Platforms adopted. But learning doesn't change.

What's missing is a systematic way to connect:
  • Classroom instruction: what students are actually learning
  • Family action: clear, specific things families can do at home
  • Sustained communication: over time, not just during enrollment
WHAT WE DO
FASTalk (Families & Schools Talk) is Family Engagement Lab's research-backed approach to instructional family engagement.
FASTalk brings Family Engagement Lab's research and implementation learning to life through curriculum-aligned family learning resources, structured routines, and implementation supports that help schools connect classroom instruction with family action at home.
HOW FASTALK WORKS

01- Resources

Curriculum-Aligned Family Learning Activities
Messages, activities, and learning prompts aligned to exactly what students are studying in the classroom. For example: ask what a child noticed in a text, try a math problem together the way it came up in class, or discuss a character's decision and connect it to something from home.

02- Implementation Support

Support That Helps Schools Build the Conditions for This to Stick
The teacher routines, communication cadences, and school-side structures that make family engagement sustainable -- not just at the start, but over time. Because FASTalk isn't only what families receive. It's what schools build.

03- Research

Evidence on What Makes Family Engagement Effective
Field learning generated across diverse school contexts on what actually predicts whether instructional family engagement takes hold, and what gets in the way. We share what works and what doesn't.

PARTNERS

Family Engagement Lab has partnered with districts, funders, and education organizations to study what makes family engagement work in real school conditions.
FROM THE FIELD
Just as we train and plan for curriculum and instruction, we must also plan to build regular habits in making lasting connections with our children's families."
Dr. Megan McNamara [Superintendent, Redesign Schools Louisiana]
There was a big shift with the engagement -- the kids were excited to talk about what they learned The teachers felt that the program was an excellent fit for them."
Teviron Ross [Asst. Principal, East Baton Rouge Parish]
I've seen FASTalk carry the curriculum further than I was able to in the classroom."
Emily Leone [Teacher, Sabine Parish]
I see a level of confidence in my parents in their ability to influence their child's academic achievement that I have never seen in the past, and I do give a lot of credit to FASTalk for that."
Lorraine Mann [Teacher, Oakland Unified]
